THE EASTERN ESPLANADE
The Eastern Esplanade Project was the final phase in developing the Haven and its facilities. The site was previously a car park which has been relocated further to the east.
Cheetah Marine are committed to making the harbour a success story by benefiting and encouraging regeneration within the town and other local businesses. The Harbour-side development ‘OceanBlue Quay’ constructed in 2009 has fulfilled a number of roles to compliment the operation of Ventnor Haven and provide year round jobs and added facilities to the town. OceanBlue Quay features many facilities necessary to the essential maintenance and repair work within the Haven.
Cheetah Marine are the leading manufacturers of small workboat and leisure catamarans in Europe. The catamarans are custom built to order and their applications span the requirements of the majority of small craft operations including commercial fishing, hydrographic survey, harbour patrol, environmental impact research, charter, dive, leisure and angling. The boats have been designed, built and tested in Ventnor since the company was first established in 1991. 25 – 30 bespoke catamarans are produced each year.
The workshop is predominantly used as a fit out shop for Cheetah Catamarans which includes fitting of electronics, specialised hydrographic survey equipment, engines and navigation equipment. All fibreglass work is carried out prior to the boats arrival on the seafront.
CORPORATE AND RACE EVENTS
Since the official opening in summer 2003, Ventnor Haven has hosted a number of events. Honda UK used the Haven and car park adjacent as a venue for their Honda Motorbike Dealers day. A selection of Honda goods were on show with motorbikes and cars available for dealers to take for a spin. On the water, Cheetah Marine were taking people out for rough weather sea handling trials.
Thundercats and the P1 Race Series have used Ventnor Haven on a number of occasions, racing from Ventnor Haven and as a stop off on the Round the Island race from Cowes. WhiteAir also hosted part of their 2004 championships from the Haven in conjunction with the cascade slalom.
Shanklin Sailing Club hold their annual Ventnor Cup Race from Ventnor. First racing to Ventnor from Shanklin, then round a course set by the Harbour Master and sponsored by Ventnor Yacht Club.
VENTNOR HAVEN FISHERY
In 2007, a local fishermen Geoff Blake and his wife Cheryl Blake opened a fish pier in the Haven called ‘Ventnor Haven Fishery’. The fishery has been purpose built to land and sell locally caught seafood. As well as supplying many of the Island’s pubs and restaurants with fresh fish and shellfish, the fishery also sells to the general public from their onsite shop year round. If you would like to sample the fish direct – pick up some fish and chips from the new fish and chip shop on the pier.
Local seafood includes: freshly picked crab, whole lobsters, plaice, sea bass, cod, grey mullet, mackerel, sprats, whelks, rock salmon. The catch varies due to weather conditions and seasons so check the blackboard for what is on offer.
ABOUT VENTNOR HAVEN
Ventnor Haven is part of an ongoing project which has been funded by DEFRA, SEEDA, the Isle of Wight Council and Private Investors. The project aims to fulfil a number of key ambitions to benefit the town of Ventnor which include:
The provision of a fair weather haven for visiting craft which provides the only stopping-off point along the south coast of the Isle of Wight, as well as a new access facility for local boat owners, anglers and other interest groups
Improve the efficiency of the local shellfish industry which previously operated from local beaches by encouraging a more sustainable operation which will in turn compliment tourism.
Provide a walkway along the western arm of the Haven allowing people to view the spectacular views along the Undercliff coastline. In effect replacing the former pier walkway.
Encourage regeneration on both Ventnor seafront and in the town.
The building of the Haven was funded by SEEDA on the condition that the land adjacent to the Haven would be regenerated to provide complimentary marine based facilities and employment.
Since its opening in 2003, Ventnor Haven has become increasingly busy. Commercial operations in the form of fishing, launch and sea trials of locally built Cheetah Catamarans continue throughout the year. Fresh fish is available daily from the newly built fish wharf above the Haven. In the summer months, the Haven becomes a hive of activity for small leisure and angling craft as well as the stop off point for small vessels and RIBs venturing around the south side of the island.

Ventnor is the main town in the Undercliff which stretches from St Catherines Lighthouse on the most southern tip of the island to Luccombe 10 miles northeast along the coast. Ventnor first became popular as seaside town in Victorian times when the Undercliff was known as the British Madeira. The coastline faces south east and is protected by an upper cliff which is the result of a series of landslides at the end of the last ice age. This combination of geology and protection from northerly winds gives the varied and interesting landscape which enjoys one of the most favourable climates in the British Isles.
Ventnor Haven is located at the eastern end of the Esplanade with Ventnor leisure beach located just west of the main rock arm. The bay is good for sunbathing and swimming in the summer and has a good variety of pubs, cafes and restaurants offering food, drink and live entertainment all year round. From Ventnor Bay, the coastal path leads to Steephill Cove and the Botanic gardens a mile to the west or the Victorian village of Bonchurch a mile to the east.
In more recent years Ventnor Town has undergone major development reinventing itself as a stylish destination. Many derelict Victorian properties have been renovated providing accommodation for visitors in the form of boutique hotels, luxury guest houses and self-catering holiday lets. Popular with visiting families and walking parties, Ventnor has a good local community spirit and hosts numerous musical and sports events.
